According to the Ministry of Health, there are about 20 million people with diabetes in China. About 5 percent or 1 million of them are young people.

Shao Junwu, a lawyer from Guangdong's Guoyuan-Lingdong Law office, believes such a policy violadtes the constitution, which guarantees citizens the basic right to receive education. "It hurts their competitiveness," said Shao, "it's hard for student with high school education to find a good job."

Legal action may now be Wang's only hope. He admits that he did not tell the university about his diabetic condition. He says he wanted to be treated like any other student.

"It is difficult for a person from a small village like me to enter a university," Wang said. "But everything is now in vain."

Meanwhile, Qing will continue to inject herself with insulin every morning in the bathroom. She hopes her secret will be kept until after she graduates.
